MPD (Militarized Public Defenders)

These well-armed, well-armored groups of private "police" estates of the very rich, ensuring that no scavengers or outside agitators disturb or harm their wealthy benefactors. They do not travel far from the grounds that they are protecting and have little interest in social pleasantries. The group formed quickly in the wake of societal collapse, made up primarily of police and security guards.

There are four wealthy families that direct the MPD forces: the Reichmans, the Reyes, the Lukowskis, and the Johnsons. The Reichmans currently hold the position of greatest power throughout the families, however, their patriarch has recently died leaving his unqualified widow, Frederika Reichman, at the head of the community. The other families realize now is the chance to gain power for themselves, and a power struggle has begun within the community.

During the time leading up to the apocalypse, the MPD was heavily involved in cutting down protestors and religious groups.

Ranks

The MPD uses a mixture of police and military orders of hierarchical ranks starting at the top with the heads of the Four Families as admirals followed by their appointed commanders, all of whom must be direct blood relations to one of the families; the highest non-family member is the MPD Captain, a person appointed jointly by the Admirals Johnson and Reichman. The Captain appoints three Lieutenants who oversee the Tombstone (northern HQ), Allen Bradley (southern HQ), and Ol' Federal (central HQ).

Each family chooses two Sergeants, making eight in total, who must answer to their geographic Lieutenant as well as their family Commander(s) and Admiral. While Sergeants hold coveted positions and receive many benefits, they also can be pulled in opposing directions due to the constant vying for power between the various families. Company Officers, about 25 at any given time though the number fluctuates due to casualties and promotions, are guards who have distinguished themselves and have received additional combat training. While they often fulfill normal guard duties, they can also be called up for special operations that use their advanced skills. Finally, the entry-level MPD guard (around 275-300) who has many names--guardsman, grunt, workaday, soldier--can be assigned a wide variety of duties ranging from standing guard, to providing armed escorts, to managing inventory in the massive MPD storehouses or serving on equipment repair and maintenance detail. Payment rations grow exponentially with each rank,

Enlistment and Promotion

Entry into the MPD ranks does not come easy and the vast majority of present-day guards are legacies, having family members (almost always male) who previously served. The basic training at the Allen Bradley headquarters is long and intense and teaches hand-to-hand combat and proficiency in several different firearms. Training fatalities are not uncommon, and many who survive are too debilitated to serve in the field and become forced into low-paying civil services.

MPD guards rise in rank through the accumulation of "feathers," or commendations from senior guards. Grunts with 50 feathers may apply to become Officers; when Officers reach 100 feathers they enter a pool of possible candidates for Sergeant. Sergeants with 150 feathers become eligible for becoming a Lieutenant. In reality, the system has little validity as the MPD (probably intentionally) do not keep centralized records for commendations, instead requiring individuals to keep their own running tallies. It is widely rumored that guards have had dozens of commendations disqualified for unspecified "irregularities," while others have had their feathers double- or triple-counted when it suits a specific administrators needs. Still, most guards keep track of their feathers as they do provide some evidence of excellence in the line of duty.
